What is NFC?

When we say what NFC is, it comes to mind with the abbreviation of the words Near Field Communication, one of the new generation payment systems (NFC). The Turkish equivalent is defined as Near Field Communication.

For the connection to be established, the two devices must be compatible with each other. At least one of them must transmit and the other must receive the signal.

Since NFC is currently used primarily in payment systems, it can be considered a technology developed for that purpose. However, here we are talking about the two devices communicating with each other.

Before smart devices entered our lives, this communication was enabled by infrared technology. Smartphones now use Bluetooth technology, which allows us to transmit much faster and easier. NFC technology, on the other hand, seems to go one step further here.

Just like Bluetooth, NFC enables communication via radio waves. Now radio waves are becoming the standard for mobile data transfers. For the connection to be established, two NFC-enabled devices are required. One device is the transmitter and the other is the receiver. For example, if one POS device is an NFC tag and the other is a smartphone, the POS device is only a passive device that can send data but not receive it. The smartphone, on the other hand, becomes an active NFC device that can both receive and send signals from the NFC tag, i.e. the POS device.

The NFC system works on the same principle as Bluetooth. The difference between NFC and Bluetooth is that no device pairing or authorization is required for data transmission. To receive information or pay using NFC technology, the user simply needs to touch the sending device with an NFC-compatible smartphone.

With NFC technology, communication takes place in both directions.

One-way communication requires the presence of an active and a passive NFC device. Communication between an NFC tag and an NFC-compatible smartphone falls into the category of one-way communication.

Two-way communication

Two-way communication requires two active NFC devices. Communication between two NFC-enabled smartphones for file transfer is called two-way communication.

Advantages and disadvantages of NFC technology

NFC technology is both useful and very convenient. After all, we never let our smartphones out of our sight. So why not use it when shopping in stores? Payments are also very fast with contactless credit cards that use NFC technology.

NFC technology does not contain such a complex system to understand or adopt. It is very easy to install and use.

Moreover, it is safer to pay with an NFC-enabled device. This is because with this system, there is no physical credit card. There is no risk of your card details being confiscated or stolen. If your smartphone is stolen, you are still protected by your PIN and password.

In terms of security, the very short range is also an advantage. This is because the longer the range, the more likely it is to be used by hackers. If the NFC signal covers a very large area, the likelihood of information being stolen increases. At this point, it makes sense to pay attention to the device POS when paying with a cell phone.

NFC technology can be used in many ways. It is not only used as a payment system, but also for entertainment. With your friends, you can send and receive things to each other, hear and see something together.

NFC technology has many advantages, but also some disadvantages.

NFC technology does not like long-distance relationships. If the device you want to connect with is more than 4 cm away, the connection cannot be established. If you want to transfer data and there is a certain distance, you can use Bluetooth technology. Apart from that, the devices should be as close as possible, especially when making payments.

NFC technology performs transactions at a relatively slow speed. Therefore, it is not very useful for transferring large files, such as videos.

Although NFC technology is secure, hackers are always on the lookout for vulnerabilities for mobile devices. For this reason, it cannot be said that NFC is 100% secure like all other payment systems.

Before you can use NFC technology, you need to check if your smartphone is compatible with NFC. For this purpose, you can check the functions of your phone. If your phone is compatible, you can use it immediately after the settings. Newer smartphones are made in accordance with the NFC system. If you have an old phone, it is useful to check its compatibility.

To start reading the NFC tag, you first need to enable the NFC option in the Settings menu of your Android phone. After that, you can start your purchase. To do this, you just need to touch the back of your smartphone with any NFC-compatible device POS, or if you want to exchange files with another phone, touch the other phone.

How to use NFC on iPhone devices?

You can automatically read NFC tags on iPhone XS and newer models without the need for an application. The NFC feature can also be used on older iPhone models, but you will need to download a third-party application.
